10 Test 2 Task 1
The tables below give information about sales of Fairtrade*-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in five European countries.
The tables compare five European countries in terms of the amounts of sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in two different years. Looking more closely at the trend for the tables, it can be clearly seen that the sales of Fairtrade coffee increase in all five countries, while the sales of Fairtrade bananas rise in three countries except in Sweden and Denmark from 1999 to 2004.
According to the first table, the UK saw the greatest increase in the sales of Fairtraded coffee. The figure for the UK rose dramatically from €1.5 million in 1999 to €20 million in 2004. While the figure for Switzerland doubled to €6 million in 2004, the figures for Sweden, Denmark and Belgium went up slightly by less than €1 million over the period shown.
Based on the second table, Switzerland depicted the highest proportion of the sales of Fairtrade bananas over the period shown. There was a surge in the sales of Fairtrade bananas in Switzlerland from €15 million in 1999 to €47 million in 2004. The similar trend can also be seen in the figures for the UK and Belgium, which the figures grew up by €4.5 and €3.4 respectively over a 5-year period. By contrast, a relative drop took place in the sale of Fairtrade bananas from €1.8 to €1 million in Sweden and from €2 to €0.9 million in Denmark from 1999 to 2004.
